※At the Ashio Copper Mine, socialists emerged as leaders, marking the beginning of Japan's earliest labour movements. In 1901, when the company sought to suppress the labour movement, a riot erupted, prompting miners to blow up mine facilities with dynamite and barricade themselves in the tunnels. The military was deployed to suppress the uprising.
