※This was an old mine shaft from the Edo period named after an eagle's nest above the mine entrance. The discovery of a new major ore vein here put the copper mine operations in Ashio back on track. At the time, modern equipment was not yet available, and lamp oil was made by filling abalone shells with rapeseed oil.
