This painting depicts Misako Enoki, founder of the feminist activist group Chu-pi-ren, confronting the moral conservatism of the Japanese Christian organization Kyōfūkai. While Kyōfūkai opposed prostitution and contraception on religious grounds, Enoki argued that reproductive choices — including the use of the contraceptive pill — should belong entirely to women themselves. The work revisits the struggle over bodily autonomy in 1970s Japan, framing it as an unresolved contemporary issue. Through protest imagery and confrontational symbolism, Shimada transforms political conflict into a psychologically charged scene. The phrase “My rights have nothing to do with your morality” asserts self-determination against paternalistic control.
