    Flower, 1980

    Watercolor on colored paper

    24.2 x 27.3 cm

    USD 40,000.-[FRAMED]

In this drawing from 1980, Kusama depicts a flower - another recurring motif in her works - inspired by the nature that she was immersed in during her childhood in Matsumoto, her hometown. Swashes of water are layered over a network of intricate lines, creating a soft, blurry effect reminiscent of faded memories.

Reflecting in the Field of Love, 2011

    Etching + Stencil [3 colors]

    45 x 37.5 cm [Image] / 62.5 x 53 cm [Paper]

    Edition of 30

    USD 13,200.-[FRAMED]

In this series of prints made more recently between 2011 and 2012, Kusama repeats motifs of eyes, face profiles and organisms atop backgrounds of bold colours. In contrast with the fine detail in her earlier prints, the improvised expression of free lines as well as the textured surface of the paper used here surprises the viewer. Amidst this, her signature style remains, making all her works instantly recognizable.

There is a thoughtful sensitivity in the multiple motifs and references that Banerjee uses in her work. She is able to appropriately represent the density of the urban experience by suggesting disparate phenomena to coexist within the same framework, including manifestations of anthropology, ethnography, mythologies and the Indian diaspora.

  • MASANORI HANDA

    (B. 1979) BASED IN TOKYO, JAPAN

Masanori Handa's world is one of playful, impressionistic, yet nonetheless contemplative experimentation. Sites, scenery, and urban phenomena are the loci at which fleeting encounters and occurences are vividly remembered and recorded by Handa. His unique approach results in a variety of large installations and exuberant drawings. Click here to find out more about the artist.

Handa's drawings from the "nakakiyo no entakukei" series are an extension of his installation piece of the same title, inspired by a traditional Japanese poem known for an expression of a long, humid night. The drawings depict surreal, imagined sceneries in rich, bold watercolours and oil pastels.
